Prompt tracking, explained: what to track and why

In AI search, the prompt is the keyword. Pick the wrong prompts and you measure the wrong thing. Here is how to choose.

The keyword was the atom of old SEO. The prompt is the atom of AI search. Get your prompt list right and everything downstream, your share of voice, your gaps, your wins, measures something real. Get it wrong and you are tracking noise.

A prompt is just the question a person types into an AI. "What's the best SEO tool for a small startup." "Compare JustSEO and Otterly." "Is X worth the price." Each one is a moment where an AI either mentions you or does not.

Choose prompts by buyer intent

Map prompts to where the buyer stands, not to search volume.

A workable starting set is twenty to fifty prompts spread across those stages, weighted toward consideration, where the competition for the answer is fiercest.

Run them right

Read the trend, then act

The chart is not the point. The point is what it tells you to do. A prompt where competitors get named and you do not is a content gap with an address. A prompt where you slip month over month is an early warning. Each line on the chart should end in a to-do, not a shrug.

That is the whole loop. Pick the prompts your buyers actually ask, watch them across the models, and turn every gap into a fix. The teams that win AI search are not the ones with the most prompts. They are the ones who act on the few that matter.
